Baby Botanist
By, Dr. Laura Gehl
Baby Botanist studies plants. In her lab coat, she looks at plants both large and small. She finds plants
growing in many places. Can plants grow on water? Which foods come from plants? How does a seed
grow? Find out with Baby Botanist!
Why Lina Loves It:
“I received this board book for my baby shower from a fellow plant nerd, and it became a favorite of my
child for years. It is a part of a series that teaches kids what scientists do in an easy-to-understand
language. As a person of color, I like that the baby scientists are different genders and have varied
skin colors.”
In a Garden
By, Tim McCanna
How does a garden grow? Follow along from seed to sprout to bud to flower as a garden blooms. Worms,
ladybugs, millipedes, and more help a garden grow each season. Tim McCanna’s gorgeous, rhyming text,
combined with Aimée Sicuro’s stunning illustrations make this charming picture book as informative as it
is fun to read aloud. Bonus content features tons of cool facts about ecosystems and the symbiosis
between plants and bugs.
Why Sasha Loves It:
“In a fun and colorful manner, this book poetically describes the journey of a plant from seed to
blooming flower. From the pollinators to the worms beneath the soil, to the changes each season brings,
the reader learns the reciprocal relationship between plants, humans, bugs, and birds. In a
Garden is a warm welcome to the magical wonders and benefits of ecological gardening.”
Warriors
By, Erin Hunter
Epic adventures. Fierce warrior cats. A thrilling fantasy world. For generations, four Clans of wild cats
have shared the forest according to the laws laid down by their ancestors. Warriors is a series of
multiple books, organized into multiple arcs, featuring the adventures of feral cats living in
self-supporting groups called Clans in the forest. The Clan cats mark their borders, defend their land
from enemy cats, adhere to the warrior code – a set of rules each Clan cat must follow – and train their
young to survive in the forest. They believe the spirits of their dead reside in StarClan, who send
prophecies and signs to guide their living descendants. Each series follows one to four point of view
characters as they struggle to grow up and survive the dangers that threaten their Clan, both outside of
their borders and within. Get it in storybook or graphic novel format!
Why Lina Loves It:
“I'm a cat-obsessed adult, so this fantasy young adult series got me hooked, especially because each clan
has an herbalist cat that supports the group and when ready, gains an apprentice to pass on their
traditions, similar to folk herbalism.”
Shanleya's Quest
By, Tom Elpel
In a mythical world where time is a liquid that falls as rain upon the land, young Shanleya paddles her

fun metaphorical format. Readers young and old can join Shanleya's Quest, learning the patterns to
correctly identify more than 45,000 species of plants to their proper families. The Quest will change
the way you see the world, enabling you to experience nature in a new and magical way that you probably
never imagined possible.
Why Lata Loves It:
“In Shanleya's Quest, the stories all help one understand plant families and also their supportive
properties.”
