Spicy Hot Chocolate

Craving some heat this winter? You’ll love this herbalist-formulated interpretation of a traditional Mexican hot chocolate. Rich and decadent from the chocolate, with a sweet hint from the Cinnamon and a note of spice from the Cayenne, this hot cocoa is perfect for a cozy night curled up with a good book. Adjust the heat to your liking, but we found that our Cayenne liquid herbal extract is only mildly spicy once the other herbs join the mix! It leaves a slight fiery aftertaste that mellows quickly.

Cayenne offers more than flavor here. This herb has traditionally been considered to be warming and stimulating to the circulatory system, and it also offers traditional support of the cardiovascular system.*

Ingredients

Serves 1

1 to 1 ½ cups dairy or unsweetened non-dairy milk

1 tablespoon unsweetened Cacao or dark cocoa powder

0.7 ml Herb Pharm Cayenne liquid herbal extract

½ teaspoon ground Cinnamon

¼ teaspoon Vanilla extract

2 teaspoons pure Maple syrup (or to taste)

Pinch of salt

Optional: Marshmallows

Instructions

  1. In a small pan over low heat, whisk together the milk, Cacao or cocoa, Cinnamon, and salt.
  2. Bring it to a simmer, then immediately remove from heat. Do not let it boil.
  3. Pour into a mug, add the Vanilla, Maple syrup, and 1 serving of Cayenne extract.
  4. Stir well to combine.
  5. Serve immediately & enjoy!

Tips:

  • Prefer a spicier kick? Use 1 cup of milk. For a milder flavor, use 1 ½ cups.
  • Serve with a sprinkle of powdered Cacao, cocoa, Nutmeg, or Cinnamon on top, if desired.
  • To mellow out the kick with a sweet treat, top with mini marshmallows.

One squeeze of the dropper equals 0.7 ml; provides approximately 1 serving of Herb Pharm liquid herbal extract.
