Can I take multiple of your extracts together in liquid?

We love talking about herbs and herbalism, and we especially love answering your questions about those topics. That's why we brought in our team of herbal experts to respond to some of the most common questions and concerns we hear.

Our herbalists have decades of combined experience working with herbs — and the people who take them. They answer your most pressing questions, in our regular column “Ask an Herbalist.”

Can I take multiple of your extracts together in liquid? And is any liquid ok?

Yes, you can take multiple extracts together in 2 oz or more of liquid. There aren’t any definitive rules, but we generally recommend up to 5 single extracts or 3 compounds. This helps focus your body on what you’d like to work on.

We recommend taking the extracts in water, or juice if you are sensitive to the strong flavor of some herbs.

Some extracts can “precipitate out”, or create what looks like little flakes, when mixed together. This usually happens when combining herbs that have tannins with other herbs that contain alkaloids. This is why some formulas have glycerin added, to create a more consistent mixture. If you find these in your bottle, you can shake it to put them back in solution. If it is in your cup, you can gently stir the liquid, but there is no reason to be alarmed, and you can drink the precipitates without any issues.

However, this is one of the reasons why we don’t recommend adding our liquid herbal extracts to your hot coffee or tea. Black tea, green tea, coffee, and even some herbal teas contain naturally occurring astringent tannins and alkaloids like caffeine, which may bind with the liquid herbal extracts. Also, there isn’t enough research yet, but the heat from the hot drinks may denature or chemically affect some of the phytochemicals of the herbal extracts, so always make sure your beverage of choice is cooled slightly before adding your liquid herbal extract.
