Calendula Oil Salve

Looking for a fun DIY project for a rainy winter afternoon? Or maybe you want to try your hand at homemade holiday gifts this year? Consider using our Calendula Oil to make an herbal salve. You only need a few simple ingredients, and kids can help, too. It’s a beginner-friendly activity that yields a rich salve that is perfect for your skin.

We prepare our Calendula Oil from the whole flowers of Certified Organic Calendula officinalis plants. The flowers are harvested at their peak in the last hot days of summer. We use dry flowers and extract them into cold-pressed, Certified Organic Olive oil. Please note that the Calendula Oil used in this project is designed for external use only.

Calendula Oil and Beeswax

Before You Get Started

  • Calendula boasts sunny yellow and orange flowers, but that means the oil is a vibrant shade of orange-yellow, too. Make sure you put down newspaper to cover your work surface, and wear an apron to protect clothing, since it may stain.
  • We recommend using 15 grams of beeswax, but you can experiment with the amount you prefer. If you use less beeswax, it will yield a softer consistency; more beeswax will yield a harder consistency that will not melt as easily.
  • Since our Calendula Oil is fragrance-free, you can add 1-2 drops of essential oils as desired to customize your salve.
  • Make sure your tins or jars are ready to go before you get started. For gifts, consider upcycling single-serve jam jars or tins from lip balm.

How to Make Calendula Salve

Equipment

Double boiler or a saucepan/pot

A heatproof glass or metal bowl that fits inside your pot, but does not touch the bottom

4 ounces of Herb Pharm Calendula Oil

15 grams beeswax

Small tins or jars

Heatproof spoon

Optional

1-2 drops essential oil, such as Rosemary, Lavender, or Peppermint

Funnel

Small spatula

Instructions

  1. Pour the Calendula Oil in a double boiler and warm gently over low heat. If using a saucepan/pot and bowl, place an inch or two of water in the bottom. The water should not touch the bottom of the bowl.
  2. Add 15 grams of beeswax to the Calendula Oil and continue to warm over low heat until it melts, stirring occasionally.
  3. As soon as the beeswax is melted and mixed with the oil, remove from the heat and add essential oil, if desired.
  4. Quickly pour the mixture into your prepared tins or glass jars, leaving a small amount of space at the top. Use the funnel and/or spatula if desired.
  5. Allow your salve to cool completely before using or screwing on the lid.
  6. Store your salve away from heat and light, and use within six months.

To use, massage into skin until well absorbed, keeping in mind it will have a slight orange-yellow color that can transfer to clothing or bedding.
