Herb Pharm is Committment to Social Responsibility

Clockwise from top left:

We greatly reduce our carbon footprint through the Blue Sky Renewable Energy Program by purchasing 100% of our electricity from off-site wind generators.

United Plant Savers' mission is to protect native medicinal plants of the United States and Canada and their native habitat, while ensuring an abundant renewable supply of medicinal plants for generations to come.

Our organic herb farm is certified organic by Oregon Tilth, a research and education organization dedicated to biologically and environmentally sound and socially equitable argriculture, and authorized as an organic certifier by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Salmon-Safe is an environmental organization devoted to restoring agricultural and urban watersheds in order to provide an environment where salmon can spawn and thrive.

As their company began to grow and prosper, Herb Pharm's founders, Ed Smith and Sara Katz, realized that they and their company had an important role to play in their local home community, in the herbal and natural products communities throughout the world, and in the stewardship of the planet itself.

One of Ed and Sara’s greatest joys is providing right livelihood, health, and medical benefits, and a retirement plan for so many families in our rural community.

Ed and Sara were recognized at the Natural Products Expo in 2006 by being awarded the Socially Responsible Business Award, and in 2008 they were awarded the Herbal Industry Leader Award by the American Herb Products Association for laudable business practices. Ed and Sara believe that the herb and natural products industry should be models of social and environmental responsibility. Just as over several decades the industry has changed the way millions of people view their food and health care, we also need to be an inspiration for change about how businesses affect our society and the environment.

Organizations and Programs We Support

  • We offset 100% of Herb Pharm's electricity consumption impact through our participation in the Blue Sky Renewable Energy Program. By purchasing our electricity from off-site wind generators and geo-thermal heat capture, we help to minimize the release of carbon dioxide and other detriments to the environment.
  • Our Pharm Farm is recognized as a Botanical Sanctuary by United Plant Savers (UpS) because of our work with the conservation and propagation of endangered native medicinal plants. We cultivate the following herbs on UpS’s “At-Risk” and “To-Watch” list: Echinacea, Goldenseal, Black Cohosh, Gentian, Lobelia, False Unicorn, Wild Yam, Lomatium, Osha, Pleurisy Root, Stoneroot, and Trillium.
  • Our Pharm Farm has received Salmon Safe certification for developing a long-term strategy to enhance and preserve riparian (streams and creek) areas on our farm and wild lands, and for our ecologically sustainable agricultural practices.

Each year, 5% of Herb Pharm’s net income is donated to non-profit environmental organizations such as:
